Event: A Conversation on Colombia with President Alvaro Uribe Vélez

On September 19, the Latin America Initiative at Brookings will host a conversation with President Alvaro Uribe Vélez of Colombia. President Uribe will discuss the U.S.-Colombia relationship, including economic and security challenges such as his administration’s fight against the illegal drug trade and prospects for the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement.

A panel discussion will follow President Uribe’s remarks and will include Senior Fellow Mauricio Cárdenas, director of Brookings’s Latin America Initiative and Moisés Naím, editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy magazine. Lael Brainard, vice president and director of Global Economy and Development at Brookings will provide introductory remarks and will moderate the discussion. Following the program, President Uribe and the panelists will take audience questions.
