The
extension of the Andean Trade Preferences and Drug Eradication Act
(ATPDEA) for Bolivia shows US Congress willingness to support Bolivian
people and the role that ATPDEA plays to generate jobs and reduce
poverty.
Contrary
to Congress’ decision, President Bush, in a political assessment
continues the process of suspension of ATPDEA benefits for Bolivia.
Therefore, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) published at
the Federal Register a request for public comments and is holding a
public hearing on October 23, 2008.  In response, the Bolivian
government is sending Mr. Luis Arce, Minister of Finance and Mr. Felipe
Caceres, Vice Minister of Social Defense to Washington DC to share
Bolivian Government technical point of view regarding Bolivian
Government commitments and concrete results in the fight against
illicit drugs.
